Building in-house risk management capability

An increasing number of organisations, in both the public and the private sectors, are becoming aware of the need for some in-house risk management capability.

Every successful organisation manages risk anyway, but the more changeable and complex the environment in which you operate and the larger any single project or other initiative becomes, the greater the need for explicit attention to risk rather than just expecting it to be picked up by routine operating practices.

Getting It Right

If you are embarking on the development of an in-house risk management capability, the key considerations are as follows:

  • Poorly designed risk management processes can become burdensome and bureaucratic.  Cost-effectiveness is essential.  Poorly conceived risk management procedures will not inspire confidence. They may even put people off the subject altogether.
  • Implementation must be well planned to raise awareness of the importance of effective risk management and the possible consequences of failing to take it seriously.  There are many instances of well founded risk management processes becoming sidelined because they were poorly introduced.

STRENGTHENING WORKFLOW MANAGEMENT

Formal risk management can seem threatening to people who have been used to working without it.  Careful management of expectations is essential to ensure that the introduction goes smoothly.  The necessary review of informal risk management practices may expose anomalies in the way you work, leading to changes in the responsibilities of some managers, or at least affect the relationship between those who set targets and those who are bound by them.  None of this need be a problem but it can undermine the whole initiative if handled poorly.

If you would like to discuss the development of a sound risk management capability in your organisation, even if you are not yet sure how and when you want to proceed, please contact us.
